Ernestina Abbühl
Switzerland
Ernestina Abbühl is a Romansh artist from the Engadin region. Her abstract reliefs draw inspiration from the Alpine landscape, with ice, rock, earth and Alpine flora serving as central themes.
She primarily creates these reliefs using materials such as papyrus, paraffin and wood. She not only depicts nature, but also exposes it, exploring what lies beneath the surface. To achieve this, she combines contemporary depictions of everyday human life, or objets trouvés, with plants from the Engadin mountains, using handmade paper and wax. She observes layers in nature that have formed over long periods of time and are still changing. The harsh Engadin landscape of rock, firn and glaciers inspires colour nuances, layers and high-alpine emotions in her work.
Her distinctive reliefs blend the ruggedness and minimalism of the Alpine landscape with delicate, meticulous processes.
Alpine art is the work of two Engadin artists: Ernestina Abbühl and Rolf Bräm. They explore the Alpine landscape, expressing it in their own unique artistic ways.
