Natalia Rose
Denmark
Natalia Rose's works are characterised by clear lines, intense colours and distinct formal structures. Many of her pieces contain semiological references and art-historical allusions.
Some of her paintings deliberately leave areas incomplete. Reducing detail is a key part of her creative process, allowing viewers to interpret her work in their own way. Rather than depicting what she actually sees, her paintings portray what she remembers and desires.
The artist was born in Stavropol, Russia. Influences from the Russian art tradition are unmistakable in her work. These range from elements of folk art to avant-garde movements such as those of Kandinsky, Malevich, Larionov and Goncharova. The influence of Central European and Abstract Expressionism is also clearly visible.
Natalia Rose studied at both Moscow State University and the University of Copenhagen. She currently lives and works in Denmark. She is best known for her semi-abstract works, characterised by broad, powerful brushstrokes. Through her art, she explores issues of visual communication, investigating how abstract content can be conveyed through colour choice, symbolism, and composition.
Since her first exhibition in Copenhagen in 2014, her work has been shown in New York, Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Saint Petersburg and London. Her works can be found in private collections in the USA, Canada, Sweden, Denmark and beyond.
Her paintings are created through a multi-layered working process. Although the spontaneous effect of the surface structure suggests otherwise, they are carefully constructed compositions. An important part of her technique is underpainting. As an underlying layer of colour, it contributes to the final composition's sense of depth.
